To understand the water well contractor's license number, please note:

The first two numbers or letters of the license number indicate the location of the water well contractor. For example:

• '01' means the water well contractor is in Water Division 1 (approximately the southeast quarter of the state);
• '02' means the water well contractor is in Water Division 2 (approximately the northeast quarter of the state);
• '03' means the water well contractor is in Water Division 3 (approximately the northwest quarter of the state); and
• '04' means the water well contractor is in Water Division 4 (approximately the southwest quarter of the state).

If the water well contractor resides out-of-state, the first two letters of the license indicates the contractor's home state (e.g., MT, ID, NE, SD, etc.).

The letters following the first two numbers or letters indicate whether the water well contractor is licensed as a water well drilling contractor (WD), water well pump installation contractor (PI), or both (WDPI).

The last three numbers are the actual license number. For example, the license above would be the number one license for an individual who is both a water well drilling contractor and pump installation contractor.
